In the worlds of Venice and Cyprus, corruption takes hold and everything begins to crumble. Heroism falters, revenge reigns freely, and jealousy trumps all in the post-apocalyptic landscape that consumes the play. Lieutenant Iago reduces those around him to the level of pawns in his Machiavellian game. Each time he opens his mouth, his words prick the ears of those around him with a poison that slowly decays any purity that remains. He advises his commanding officer Othello to “beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-ey'd monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on”, while he watches him become its victim with glee. Ultimately, Iago’s venomous tongue infects Othello to bleed Venice of its most beautiful treasure. In this new world, manipulation becomes a thing of beauty and beauty, a bearer of destruction.
